How to combat boredom in cats – Inspiring ideas and advice

Keeping your cat mentally and physically stimulated is one of the most important aspects of being a cat owner. Cats are naturally curious and active animals, and if their need for stimulation is not met, it can lead to boredom, stress and even behavioral problems.

To understand how you can help your cat stay happy and engaged, we spoke to Dr. Anna Karlsson, a board-certified veterinarian and cat behavior expert. Here, she shares her top tips for keeping your cat active while building a stronger relationship between you and your cat.

Why is activation so important for cats?

“Cats have a natural need to hunt and explore their environment,” explains Dr. Karlsson. “In the wild, they spend a lot of time searching for food, which not only keeps them physically active but also mentally stimulated.”

If this need is not met, the cat may begin to show signs of boredom, such as scratching furniture, overeating, or becoming lazy. Studies show that cats that receive enough mental and physical stimulation are more likely to have a healthy weight and better behavior (“Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2018”).

Tips for keeping your cat engaged

1. Create a hunting experience
“Use toys that mimic prey to activate your cat’s hunting instincts,” says Dr. Karlsson. Stick toys, springs, and balls that move unpredictably are great options.

2. Switch between different toys
Just like children, cats can get bored with the same toy. Change toys regularly to keep playtime exciting. “Vary with different types of toys that encourage chasing, climbing, and mental problem-solving,” recommends Dr. Karlsson.

3. Leverage technology
Interactive toys with smart technology, which can change direction or avoid obstacles, are excellent for stimulating your cat for a longer period of time.

4. Create an enriched home
A stimulating home is crucial. Dr. Karlsson suggests including scratching posts, cat trails, and different levels of elevation to give your cat an area to explore and play in.

5. Plan playtime every day
“Set aside 10–15 minutes twice a day for active play with your cat. It can do wonders for their mood and energy,” says Dr. Karlsson.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cat Activation

How much play does a cat need every day?
According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, adult cats should get at least 20–30 minutes of active play each day. Kittens may need more because they are more energetic.

What do I do if my cat doesn't seem interested in playing?
Try different types of toys and identify what your cat enjoys. Some cats prefer chasing movements, while others like chasing lights or balls. Interactive toys can also be a good solution.

Can indoor cats really be active and happy?
Yes! With the right environment and toys, indoor cats can get enough mental and physical stimulation to be both active and happy.
